Guide to Jungle Cruise at Magic Kingdom

Following years of planning and delays, a film adaptation of the ride was released in the United States on July 30, 2021. If you’re visiting Magic Kingdom with small children, Jungle Cruise is a good option because it has no height requirement and animatronic animals. That said, we’d only prioritize Jungle Cruise if we had Genie+ or if we were primarily planning on doing family rides (i.e. not trying to do rider switch on all the coasters). Since Jungle Cruise is not a part of Early Entry, it opens at the scheduled opening time for the park, and guests without Early Entry can still be among the first on it.

The boat then passes a lost safari group that has been chased up a pole by an angry black rhinoceros and are now trapped and surrounded by spotted hyenas. The group then passes by a pair of Nile Crocodiles and another waterfall, Schweitzer Falls (which riders are told is named after Dr. Albert Falls), and heads past the remains of a plane crash. The boat then encounters a pool of hippos, about to charge the boat until the skipper scares them off (yelling at them in Florida, firing a gun at them in California). The boat passes by another boat being raided of its supplies by chimpanzees, and then proceeds into the Mekong River.

About Theme Park Tourist

The queue was designed to wind about extensively so that guests may see all of the different artifacts in the queue. Based on guests I’ve seen when I (pretty frequently) ride it, I assume many casual guests are expecting something a little different. If you lean into the pun-centric humor, the experience is a fun one, but the hard product—the animal animatronics etc.—really isn’t top tier.

Inside the Best (and Worst) Theme Park Rides Ever Created

You’ll pass by some restaurants, shops, and the Swiss Family Treehouse before arriving at Magic Carpets of Aladdin. In addition, it was announced that the Magic Kingdom version of this attraction will debut its refreshed look later this summer, but no target date was given. The overlay was so successful that it was greatly expanded for 2014, and remained in both parks through 2016. For reasons unknown, Disneyland dropped The Jingle Cruise from its Holiday offerings in 2017, though the overlay remains a Magic Kingdom staple to this day. The origins of the Jungle Cruise can be traced back to the late 1940s, when Walt Disney Pictures began production on their True-Life Adventures series.

Learn All About Disneyland Park

This opened up the opportunity to improve several other areas of the adventures as well. And, of course, no trip to the jungle is complete without a look at the backside of water. If you can't get enough of those wise-cracking skippers, check out Skipper Show, which features stand-up comedy from a group of former cast members.

The attraction was such as hit in Southern California that another version was added to Disney’s Magic Kingdom theme park and was included on opening day at Walt Disney World on October 1, 1971. Inside, a peacock is seen showing off his feathers as well as some king cobras, giant spiders, monkeys, and a Bengal tiger can be found. After they exit, they come across an elephant bathing pool where numerous Indian elephants are relaxing in the water. The cruise concludes after the boat narrowly avoids being sprayed by water from one of the elephants.

The queue of the Jungle Cruise is heavily themed with period artifacts, tools, gear, photos and more. It is intended to resemble a colonial outpost where an exploration of the jungle rivers may be booked. It is divided into four main sections which may be opened or closed in sequence to accommodate crowd fluctuation.

Instead of passing through a village populated by indigenous people, riders now float by a sinking boat overrun by curious chimps. Die-hard Disney fans will recognize the name of the ship, the Mekong Maiden, as the name of one of Jungle Cruise's original boats that was decommissioned in 1997. "Weird Al" Yankovic wrote and recorded a song titled "Skipper Dan" about a failed actor who ended up as a guide on the Jungle Cruise, but sometimes those skippers often go on to bigger things. According to MentalFloss.com, famous wisecracking skippers include Kevin Costner, John Lasseter, and Richard Nixon's press secretary Ron Ziegler. During the festive holiday time, the Jungle Cruise undergoes a decorative refurbishment to become the Jingle Cruise. Nope, it’s not a typo, it’s a winter celebration of burlap Santa hats, Christmas jokes, ride additions, and overall holiday spirit.

Best Times to Ride

If you don’t have Genie+ and the ride is important to you, then rope drop is still your best option. It’s a long ride, it’s one of the most popular rides in the park, and if you can get it off your to-do list early you’ll have an easier time navigating the rest of your day. When all is said and done the Jungle Cruise at Disneyland is an enduring classic that offers an immersive and entertaining adventure for guests of all ages.

The combination of the skipper’s humor, classic animatronics, and immersive theming make it an enduring Disneyland favorite. Once aboard the boats, guests are introduced to their skipper and they head into the jungle, allegedly never to return. Passengers then glide precariously under the first of a pair of stone arches severely damaged by an earthquake centuries ago. These are part of the ruins of an ancient Cambodian city where a crumbling temple is one of the few things which have managed to avoid tumbling into the river.

The biggest changes up to that point came in 1994, when the attraction was rerouted and shortened to make room for the then-upcoming Indiana Jones Adventure attraction. In addition, the ride (and the entirety of Adventureland) were rethemed to be set in the 1930s to tie into Indy. This was due partially to the cold French climate not being hospitable to water rides and partially because there were several knockoff Jungle Cruises already built at various French amusement parks. As more technologically advanced attractions have been added to thepark over the years, the Jungle Cruise has, by comparison, lost some of itsluster. Though still a good attraction, it offers few thrills and no surprisesfor Disneyland Park veterans, many of whom can rattle off the ride’s narrationright along with the guide.

Jungle Cruise can be found in the heart of Adventureland in Magic Kingdom (Walt Disney World Resort) at Disneyland Park (Disneyland Resort), Hong Kong Disneyland, and Tokyo Disneyland (where the boats run in the opposite direction!). Nestled behind some Adventureland tikis, you’ll find it in Magic Kingdom across from Aladdin’s flying carpets. A studio recorded soundtrack of the Jungle Cruise was released in 1968 by Disneyland Records included as the B side of the album Walt Disney Presents The Enchanted Tiki Room and the Adventurous Jungle Cruise (ST-3966). The Jungle Cruise attraction has always featured narration by a live Disney Cast Member; for the release the narration was provided by Thurl Ravenscroft. This soundtrack was also used in Disneyland television features as early as 1964.

It appears Trader Sam has turned the Jungle Cruise’s lost & found area into his very own gift shop (you know Trader Sam, he’s always looking to make some money and come out ahead). We have seen a number of changes made in the queue in Disney World, so just be on the lookout for smaller changes like that on these attractions. As you make your way into the Jungle Cruise queue, you’ll find a number of cool details all throughout the line. When the ride was in the planning stages, Walt Disney wanted to use live animals on the Jungle Cruise, but when he found out that many of them were nocturnal, Imagineers turned to mechanical ones instead.

Whether this story is apocryphal or not, in the early 1960s Walt brought over animator Marc Davis from the Studios to “plus up” some of Disneyland’s attractions. However, a modern guest would be hard-pressed to recognize much of the attraction. Sure they would be familiar with Goff’s general concept, and if they squinted they could imagine how the rather light jungle Evans planted would grow into the lush greenery seen today, but many iconic elements of the attraction would be absent. There was no ad-libbed humor from the skippers, who played the entire experience straight. Next on the journey, riders will notice a bright new paint job on a few floating barrels just outside a classic scene that shows a band of primates rummaging through an abandoned campsite.

Albert Awol is a fictional Jungle Cruise boat captain and disc jockey for the Disney Broadcasting Company. Considered the "Voice of the Jungle", he broadcasts everything from news, to quizzes, reminders, weather, etc. on the DBC (Disney Broadcast Company). He also serves as a period disc jockey for the station, filling the airwaves with music from the 1930s depression era.

The timing of the reimagined ride lines up with the release of a Jungle Cruise movie, starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, set for a July 30 release. Disneyland's updated Jungle Cruise ride features tourists of various ethnic backgrounds getting chased by wildlife. Ahead of its official reopening on July 16th, we were invited to a media preview of the newly updated ride today in Disneyland. Despite Jungle Cruise’s ongoing popularity, in recent decades the attraction has become controversial due to its purported negative depictions of native people, specifically the “headhunter” party as well as the Trader Sam “head salesman” character. These comedic elements in-turn influenced the ride’s skipper narration, which became more and more comical over the years. The ride underwent refurbishments to become more politically friendly with its depiction and diversity of characters.
